My grandfathers family were a cornicopia of Americana. The first Native American that I have found was a man named Oconostota, whose father may have been Moytoy according to Wikipedia, but according to family traditions and a book by Narcissa Chisholm Owens, his father as an Englishman, a minister named John Beamer, in any case, he was the principal war chief of the Cherokees during the Revolutionary War, and his picture was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, on a visit to England.

My grandmother was part of the full blood group of Cherokees. My grandfather was part of the mixed blood Cherokee. He was only a month or so old when the 1906 rolls closed out. His ancestors were included the Chisholms, and the Rogers families. So, he was related to Will Rogers, and also to Talahina Rogers, wife or girl friend of Sam Houston. My grandfather was very shy, had dark black hair til just a few years before he died, he was in his 80's. He was, I think a good man. He and my grandmother divorced in 1948, the year before I was born. They had four children, two girls and two boys. My mother was the oldest. She was born in 1929, and only weighed 2 1/2 pounds. She was called a miracle baby. She slept for the first few months of her life in a dresser drawer.

My grandmothers family were related to the Sam Starr family. She heard stories from her dad that Belle and Sam STarr would visit them at their home, and that sometimes they would come and bury stuff in the barn. For years, my great grandfather, and my grandmother, and even my mom and her siblings would go back to the original homestead and dig for the lost Belle Star Treasure! Of course they never found anything, but there's another story of treasure that I can tell.

Me
I am composed of a lot of different elements, among them are not only the European background, but also the Native American line. I am Cherokee, officially a card carrying member of the Western Band of Cherokee, and am very proud of that. My moms dad was one of the last original enrollees in 1906, and my grandmother was just missed the enrollment.
I have a BA from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Tahlequah as and is the Capitol of the Western Band. I attended Purdue and went back to NSU for a Masters in History, and then on to Univeristy of Arkansas to work on a doctorate, never completed!
My interest in Native American jewelry is an outgrowth of my heritage and my education. I have always understood that Silver is a spiritual metal to the Native Americans, and I believe that.
I am in the process of writing a novel, have been for about 4 or 5 years, and I'm hoping it will bring people together, but in the process will probably also tear some away. I will try to write on a regular basis.
